Excursion 1: Fabra Observatory

  • Tuesday, 3 September 2024, start at 17:00 CEST
  • Max. 40 participants
  • Excursion duration: ca. 3 hours (90 minutes travel, 90 minutes visit in the Observatory)

The Fabra Observatory is located on the Serra de Collserola, at 411 meters above sea level, near the top of the Tibidabo. It was founded by the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona (RACAB) and opened on April 7th, 1904. The Observatory comprises three sections: Astronomy, Seismology and Meteorology.

The regular meteorological observations started in 1913. Since then, direct observations have continued without any day of interruption. In 2018, the WMO recognized the Fabra Observatory as a "long-term centenary observatory station".

During the visit, we will learn about the past and current activities of the Fabra Observatory and see its historical meteorological equipment, including the celebrated Jardí's pluviometer of intensities.

Participants will meet at the booth of the ACAM/EMS. A hybrid shuttle bus, free of cost, will be provided for the round-trip journey.

  • Departure: 17:00 CEST
  • Transport by hybrid bus from Plaça Universitat to Observatori Fabra
  • Start of the visit: 18:00 CEST
  • End of the visit: 19:30 CEST
  • Arrival at Plaça Universitat: 20:00–20:30 CEST (depending on traffic)

You will be able to register on-site, at the booth of the ACAM/EMS or the one of the Meteorological Service of Catalonia.

Places will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

Excursion 2: Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC)

  • Wednesday, 4 September 2024, start at 17:00 CEST
  • Max. 60 participants (two simultaneous groups of 30 people).
  • Excursion duration: ca 2 hours (1h travel, 1h visit).

Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) is the home of MareNostrum 5, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe (the 8th in the world as of June 2024).

The research of BSC specialises in Computer Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences and Computer Applications in Science and Engineering. In the field of Earth Sciences, BSC has renowned teams on Atmospheric Composition, Climate Variability and Change, Computational Earth Science, Earth System Services, General Earth Sciences and Global Health Resilience.

BSC was established in 2005 and hosted the first version of the MareNostrum supercomputer, the most powerful machine in Europe at the time. Its unique location, inside the Torre Girona chapel, made it win the prize for The Most Beautiful Data Center in the World in 2017.

Participants will meet at the booth of the ACAM/EMS. The journey will be by Metro: it takes about 40 minutes to get to BSC.

  • Departure: 17:00 CEST
  • Transport by Metro (L2 + L3 lines)
  • Start of the visit: 18:00 CEST
  • End of the visit: 19:00 CEST

You will be able to register on-site, at the booth of the ACAM/EMS or the one of the Meteorological Service of Catalonia.

Places will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please note that the EMS 25th Anniversary Festa will start on the same day at 20:00 CEST at the Palau de Pedralbes, located beside the BSC (around 5 minutes a walking distance).

Excursion 3: Stormwater reservoir at Parc de Joan Miró

  • Thursday, 5 September 2024, start at 17:00 CEST
  • Max. 40 participants (in two shifts of 20 people)
  • Excursion duration: ca. 2.5 hours (1 h travel, 1 h 30 min visit)

Barcelona has several underground stormwater reservoirs to regulate the large amount of water that the city can receive during intense precipitation episodes. On the one hand, they prevent water from flooding the streets; on the other hand, they also retain the water before it flows into the sewage system and allow their purification before being released into the sea.

These reservoirs are good examples of urban adaptation to the increase of high precipitation events expected to result from climate change in this area of the Mediterranean.

On this excursion, you will visit the reservoir under the Parc de Joan Miró. Please be aware that in case of a rain forecast, this excursion will be cancelled.

Participants will meet at the booth of the ACAM/EMS. The journey will be by Metro or walking (30 minutes walking distance):

  • Departure: 17:00 CEST
  • Transport by Metro (L1) or walking
  • Meeting point at Parc de Joan Miró: Dona i Ocell Sculpture
  • Start of the visit: 18:00 CEST
  • End of the visit: 19:30 CEST
  • Visitors must dress with their bodies fully covered and closed shoes

You will be able to register on-site, at the booth of the ACAM/EMS or the one of the Meteorological Service of Catalonia.

Places will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
